Child Dental Benefits Scheme (CDBS)

Medicare’s Child Dental Benefits Scheme helps eligible families access essential dental services for children aged 0-17 years.

Oaks Dental is proud to offer the Child Dental Benefits Scheme, a program that provides eligible children under the age of 18 with over $1000 worth of essential dental treatments every two years, covered by Medicare.

Through this initiative, families that may otherwise struggle to afford dental care, can access vital treatment for their children –  establishing healthy habits and promoting lifelong oral health from an early age.

Frequently Asked Questions – Child Dental Benefits Scheme (CDBS)

How do I know if my child is eligible for CDBS?

Eligibility is determined by Medicare and is generally based on your child’s age, Medicare status, and whether your family receives certain government benefits such as Family Tax Benefit Part A. Our team can check your child’s eligibility for you during your visit or prior to booking.

How much does the CDBS cover?

Eligible children can receive up to a capped benefit (currently up to $1,095) over a two-year period for approved dental services. The exact amount available depends on how much of the benefit has already been used.

What dental treatments are included under CDBS?

CDBS typically covers essential dental services such as check-ups, cleans, X-rays, fillings, fissure sealants, extractions, and root canal treatment. Coverage is subject to Medicare guidelines and clinical assessment.

    Are there any out-of-pocket costs?

If your child has sufficient available benefits, most eligible treatments can be bulk billed. However, out-of-pocket costs may apply if the benefit limit has been reached or if treatment is not covered under the scheme. We will always discuss any potential costs with you before proceeding.

What treatments are not covered by CDBS?

The scheme does not cover orthodontic treatment, cosmetic procedures, or dental services performed under general anaesthetic. Additional treatments outside the scheme may incur private fees.

Do I need a referral to use CDBS?

No referral is required. If your child is eligible, you can book directly with our team and we will guide you through the process.

How often can my child use their CDBS benefits?

The benefit is available over a two-year calendar period and can be used across multiple visits until the allocated amount is reached.

What happens if my child needs treatment beyond the CDBS limit?

If the benefit limit has been reached or additional treatment is required, we will discuss suitable options with you, including any associated fees, so you can make an informed decision.

Is early dental care really important for children?

Yes. Early dental visits help detect concerns at an early stage, support healthy development, and build positive habits that can benefit your child’s oral health long term.
