Braces

Confidence starts with a smile you love

Braces don’t just straighten teeth — they transform the way you look and feel. Whether for teens or adults, modern braces create lasting results so you can smile, eat, and speak with confidence every day.

What are braces, and do I need them?

Braces are a fixed orthodontic appliance that gently guides your teeth into place using brackets and wires. Over time, they help create a healthier bite and balanced smile by steadily shifting your teeth into alignment.

They are often recommended if you have:

  • Crowding or gaps between teeth
  • Crossbite, overbite, or underbite
  • Jaw growth or alignment concerns

For more complex cases — or when precise tooth movement is required — braces may be the preferred choice over clear aligners, particularly for teenagers.

What age is best for braces?

  • Children: From as young as 7, braces can provide early intervention to guide jaw growth.
  • Teens: The most common age (11–15), when permanent teeth have erupted and growth is active.
  • Adults: Braces are equally effective later in life, provided teeth and gums are healthy.

At Oaks Dental, we’ll assess your bite, alignment, and jaw position before creating a personalised orthodontic treatment plan.

Frequently asked questions about Braces

How long will I need to wear braces?

Most patients wear braces for 12–24 months, though this varies depending on the severity of misalignment and individual treatment goals.

    Are braces painful?

Braces are not painful when first applied. Some mild soreness or pressure may occur after adjustments — a normal sign that the braces are working. Discomfort typically eases in a few days and can be managed with soft foods and over-the-counter pain relief.

Are there different types of braces?

At Oaks Dental, we offer braces tailored to your needs:

    • Metal braces – the most common and reliable option
    • Ceramic or clear braces – blend in with natural teeth for a more discreet look
    • Lingual braces – hidden behind the teeth for complete invisibility
    • Combination treatments – braces with clear aligners in selected cases for faster results

    How much do braces cost?

    The cost depends on:

    • The complexity of your case
    • The type of braces chosen
    • The length of treatment

We’ll provide a tailored estimate at your consultation and discuss payment plans and private health insurance options.

Are braces covered by health insurance?

Yes — most private health funds include braces under Orthodontic Dental cover. We can check your rebate on the spot and advise your out-of-pocket costs.

    Living with Braces

What can I eat with braces?

Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that may damage brackets or wires. Stick to softer foods like pasta, rice, steamed vegetables, fruits, and dairy.

How often will I need adjustments?

Appointments are usually every 4–8 weeks to keep your treatment on track.

Do I need to brush differently with braces?

Yes — oral hygiene is especially important with braces. Use an orthodontic toothbrush, interdental brushes, electric toothbrush, floss threaders, or a water flosser to clean around brackets and wires thoroughly. We will guide you based on your individual hygiene needs.

    After Braces

What happens when braces come off?

We’ll remove the brackets, polish your teeth, and fit you with a custom retainer to maintain your new smile.

    Will my teeth move again?

Retainers will slowly wear out over time with regular use and require occassional replacements.

Unsure if braces are the best choice? We’re here to help.

From crowding to bite problems, braces can solve a wide range of issues. At Oaks Dental, we’ll explain your options clearly so you can make an informed decision without any pressure.
